White Ribbon is an international symbol of activism against domestic and gender-based violence towards women and children. Since its founding in Canada in 1991, representatives of White Ribbon now exist in over 60 countries around the world. The white ribbon logo symbolizes a personal oath to never commit, conceal, or justify violence against women.
Involving men in the process of fighting systemic violence towards women is becoming a widespread trend throughout the world. In 2009, the UN Secretary-General established an international network of male leaders who are opposed against violence towards women, including Spanish Prime Minister José Zapatero, former Chilean President Ricardo Lagos, Paolo Coelho, and others. Additionally, celebrities such as David Beckham, Johnny Depp, and Paul McCartney also support the cause by wearing a white ribbon annually.
Since its founding in 2014, White Ribbon Ukraine has intensified its activities, as seen through the adoption of new legislation criminalizing domestic violence in December of 2017.
